The Move
8/31/10

Since our move to Denver became official in May, Jamie and I have had many conversations as to when the "big move" was going to happen. Jamie, of course, had to move at the end of June to start his new job; but the question was when would I move (with everything in our house.) At first, we thought we'd keep the house until the wedding so that we would have a place to stay and use on the Big Day. But with the housing market in a dump, we thought it would be best to try and sell the house. So, after a lot of back-and-forth trying to pick a weekend, August 21st was the big day (one of many "big" days.)

Jamie had packed a lot of the house in May and so I dragged my feet with the last of the packing, so that, on August 21, we were ready to roll. We hired help with the moving off, of Craigslist, and got SUPER lucky. The two men that helped us move were very good at moving and packed the truck with great care. Jamie and I were a little worried about getting everything into the U-Haul since it was only a 17-footer, but we just ended up piling things up on top of each other. The packing was done by 12:30pm and Jamie and I hit the road by 2:00 after having a wonderful lunch at Blanc. Once on the road, I did what I normally do on road trips---I took a nap. Jamie drove all the way to Denver and I just got to relax (as much as one can in a U-Haul.)

Sunday morning, bright and early, Jamie and I started unloading the U-Haul. Pretty quickly, we realized that I would not be much help with unloading; so another ad was posted on Craigslist and "Thug Leo" came over to help us unload. ("Thug Leo" was this man's e-mail address and Jamie was a little unsure who I had hired. Thankfully, Thug Leo was a very hard worker and also had experience with packing and unpacking.) As we unloaded the truck, we also started a pile of items that were going back to storage. Yes, we definitely needed to get a storage unit since fitting everything from my three-bedroom house into a two-bedroom apartment was not going to happen. Unfortunately, my craft room was one of the rooms that had to be put into storage. So after years of being super crafty, I will have to put my craft room away for a six-month hiatus. Once we had everything in the apartment, Jamie was ready to roam around town and find something more fun to do. So we took the dogs and went for a hike in the mountains.

The week flew by as Jamie and I unpacked the boxes and spent every evening doing something outdoors. Some highlights of unpacking included not having the bed put together for three days because we lost a part in the move (only later to find it under a pile of clothes) and not having the futon put together for four days since we misplaced those parts. The joys of unpacking did include being able to have a seat that was not a captain's chair, a desk to work at and a dining room table. After working all day and unpacking boxes, Jamie and I went on to a couple different parks, to a wine tasting and two hikes in the mountains. It's pretty amazing living near mountains; the view from the city is beautiful. On our hikes, the scenery was beautiful but it was eerily quiet. The city girl in me was wondering what happened to all the noise and people (since we only saw one person on the trail the entire time.)

Last week in Denver was my trial run, working from home full-time. After working from home all day, I was ready to get out of the house once Jamie got home from work. The apartment is in a two-mile range of a lot of restaurants, parks and other fun places of interest. The dogs have been pretty good except when I am on conference calls or when the nearby fire station gets a call. I'm looking into some nearby places to go work from so that I can have some human interaction as well as escape from the confines of the house.

I'm really looking forward to actually getting to and settling down in Denver as this past month has seemed unusually long, especially without having Jamie around. It's also been a long month for Titan who was quite happy to see me and would follow me around the apartment all day just to make sure if I left, he got to go with.

With less than three weeks to go until the "Big Day", things are falling into place rather quickly. The DJs, transportation (trolley and bus), photographers and caterers are all being paid. Menus and head counts are finalized and schedules are getting written in stone. I do have to start parading around the house in my awesome wedding shoes to break them in. The wedding day outfit (aka. my gown) is ready for the aisle, however.

In my crafting world, the list of things to do shrinks: centerpieces, programs, pew hangers, escort cards, and a few genius ideas that I've had in the last week. (I really am trying to stop having new ideas---but the creativity faucet won't turn off.)

I am so READY and EXCITED for the wedding weekend. (Really, I'm making a week of the wedding, starting with a facial and seaweed wrap on Saturday, September 11th. The week will be full as friends and family start rolling into Kansas City starting on Tuesday.) I am ready for the wedding so that Jamie and I can talk about other things. After a year and half of being engaged, I'm ready to discuss other topics of interest. (Note: Children are not the next topic of interest.)

In just over a month...
8/14/10

My brother texted me the other day and said "a month from sunday!" and I took a deep breath and reminded myself that I just needed to focus on a day at a time.

So, what's keeping me so busy?

Work - I do love when work is busy because it means I'm not just doing “busy work” but, rather, actually working on projects. Right now, I've got three projects that I am working on, which are keeping me quite busy. In the old days, I would just work longer hours/weeks to get the work done; but with packing the house and wedding stuff, I have too much going on for me stay at work all day/week. I seem to always have something going on. I'm hoping that, after the move, I can power through my projects so that come September 10, I can go on vacation without any worries and without getting phone calls.

Moving - All I know is that my packing experience would have been a thousand times worse had it not been for Jamie doing so much of the work earlier this summer. The two rooms left to pack were the craft room and the kitchen. The kitchen took me two weeks to get through since I just kept packing a little bit at a time. The craft room is just...a disaster. I'm having to sort through what I might need for the wedding and what I know I can pack for sure. Also, since I will not have any surface to work on (since the house will be empty), I'm also trying to complete all wedding crafts. The big move is coming up a week from today and I think I will be ready after this weekend. Thank goodness for Craig's List as I was able to get some additional people to help us move. We have convinced our friend, Justin, to help us get settled, once we get to Denver, by bribing him with food and alcohol. I'm pretty excited about finally getting our stuff to Denver and my following suit, a month later.

Wedding - The wedding ideas keep coming and I've finally just stopped adding to my craft list. I do have some major items left---like flowers---but other than that it's just last-minute items. My pumpkin patch that I planted earlier this summer may not give me the yield I expected which may end up changing my table decorations slightly. The good news is I think my Plan B will work out just as well. As the big date gets closer, I'm gathering the last of the RSVPs. Unfortunately, I think there is a higher rate of a "no" response as the date gets closer. :(

35 days ‘til the big day!
