Welcome to colorful Colorado! |
7/6/10
Just twelve short days after Jamie moved out to Denver, I made the journey on I-70 to spend 4th of July weekend with him. Originally it was going to just be Titan and me making the journey. But as plans changed, I added my friend, Mary Pat, and a couple of Yorkies. The car was filled to the brim with my television, television stand, luggage, Yorkie crate, and Titan. Thankfully, Mary Pat and I had a decent amount of space in the front of the car and we weren't too cramped. The drive through Kansas was made up of fun games like "That's my cow" and "What kind of road kill is that?"

Once we got into Colorado, I dropped Mary Pat off in Fort Collins as the Cycling for Change team was stopping there on Sunday night. Once in Denver, I picked up my friend Matt (Leitzinger) on the wrong Birch Street and we found our way to the apartment. (I had accidentally given him the wrong address and since my directions were wrong as well, we had Jamie navigate us to the correct place.) After unloading the car, we took Titan and Diesel on a walk around Washington Park. The park is huge and I can't wait to start taking the dogs there on some walk/runs. That evening we went out (in Wash Park) with our friend, Justin, and some of his friends. It was a pretty low-key night as the next day was going to be a full day of fun.
On Saturday, Matt and I headed to a bar to watch the Germany vs. Argentina game. There was a surprising amount of people at the bar at 9 AM but it was one of only a few "soccer bars" in the area. While we were there, a promotions company handed out raffle tickets for t-shirts and other knick-knacks they were going to give away at the end of the game. Turns out lucky number 585 (which was mine) won a Corona Futbol cooler! Now we have a total of four items in our apartment! After the game, Jamie, Matt and I headed to Golden to go to the Coors tour. Turns out everybody else had the same idea as well, and the line was an hour long. So rather than wait in the blistering heat, we headed to Boulder to check out some of their breweries. We ended up at Twisted Pine Brewery and tried their 15 flight sampler. Their beers were quite delicious though I am not sold on the Chili Beer. The evening was spent at Coors Field watching the Colorado Rockies take on the San Francisco Giants. The game was pretty exciting but, in the end, the Rockies lost. After the game there was a fireworks show, which we followed with a night on the town.

After Matt headed home on Sunday, Jamie and I headed to Fort Collins to catch up with Sara and Bethany. It was WONDERFUL to see them again and hear some great stories from the ride. The plan was to go back on Monday. But that would mean a really late departure time from Fort Collins and we'd be back in Kansas City in the wee hours of the morning. We ended up deciding to leave Monday morning and get back to Kansas City at a decent hour since we all know that I like to sleep in cars rendering me useless to the driver---or as a driver.
It was a great weekend in Denver and I'm super-excited about moving there. I was a little nervous about the apartment for multiple reasons, having two big dogs: the amount of space, and location. It turns out that most people in the apartment building have at least one dog , of which most all are large-sized dogs. The apartment is quite spacious (though the contents of our old house are not going to fit into it) with well-sized rooms. The two downsides are that the kitchen is tiny (though, that means I have more reason to stay out of it) and the whole place is carpeted. The location is pretty amazing as we are near the Cherry Creek trail, Washington Park and just about any store that we would need.

We're in the final weeks before the wedding and I could not be more excited!
